Solyndra scandal ‘headache’ for Obama

September 24th, 2011

Executives from a solar energy firm that went bankrupt after getting a half-billion-dollar government loan refused to testify at a congressional hearing where one politician accused them of a “heist”. The House Energy and Commerce Committee opened its hearing into solar panel firm Solyndra, whose failure has become an embarrassment for the administration of President Barack Obama and his push for “green jobs.” Solyndra president and chief executive Brian Harrison and chief financial officer William Stover refused to testify at Friday’s hearing on the $535mn loan, invoking their constitutional right against self-incrimination. As Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington, the issue has become a serious political headache for Obama.

IDF 2011 Intel shows off a solar powered PC

September 20th, 2011

CHIPMAKER Intel demonstrated an experimental prototype system running Windows from a solar cell that had a desk lamp as its primary light source. The solar cell was about the size of a postage stamp and the system was capable of running Windows and a couple of applications including a “funny animation”. The staging lights probably helped too but still it was apparent that the system was running on a very small amount of power. Paul Otellini, president and CEO of Intel said “This was obviously just a technology demo since we have no plans to productise solar powered computing….yet, but it’s a clear statement of the direction and capability of what we can do with our transistor technology.” µ www.theinquirer.net
