Crazy Solar Power Plants

March 7th, 2013

And you thought it stopped at solar panels? Trace Dominguez has the lowdown on some strange new ways to harness the sun’s rays. Read More: “Three floating solar islands to launch on Swiss lake this year” www.wired.co.uk “Two Swiss companies have teamed up to build three floating “solar islands”, each with 100 photovoltaic panels, on Lake Neuchâtel this year.” “Solar Island–A Groundbreaking Concept” www.nolaris.ch “A Solar Island is a floating circular island (a tracking platform) with a diameter of up to 200 m. It consists of an outer torus and a membrane, on which the solar receivers are placed. ” “Is Solar Energy Totally Bogus or Something that Gives Hope?” scienceblogs.com “I recently posted a simple Internet meme suggesting that if we subsidized solar energy like we subsidized fossil fuels that this could be good.” “How Solar Thermal Power Works” science.howstuffworks.com “Most of us don’t think much about where our electricity comes from, only that it’s available and plentiful.” “Space Energy: Is Space Solar Power Feasible?” news.discovery.com “With the end of “cheap oil” rumored to be rapidly approaching (if not already upon us), not to mention the effects of fossil fuel use upon the environment and climate, sources of alternate, clean and renewable energy appear to be the unavoidable wave of the future.” “Power Plants: Artificial Trees That Harvest Sun and Wind to Generate Electricity” www.scientificamerican.com “A start-up proposes forests of fake trees with …

Solar Power E-bike on 3 volts (sub 15 watts) Hybrid Solar Bike test

January 4th, 2013

In this 2013 wintertime video my custom hybrid solar electric bike operates on just 3 volts or sub 15 watts of solar power, if more amps were available more torque would enable a higher speed e-bike. That is what Im trying to show in this solar bike video, most solar panels are designed for a higher voltage rather than a low voltage with high amperage. Brand new e-biking video uploaded February 14 – www.youtube.com riding rocks, sand, ice, and snow! The lightweight hand made solar panel I built is rated for approximately 24 watts in optimal conditions. Monocrystalline silicon solar cells are used but they offer just 16-17% in efficiency and are extremely brittle, newer flexible PV cell technology is close to 11% more efficient. Two years ago in mid July, I initially performed a 3 volt solar powered e-bike ride and was successful, I never got to video document that special solar bike test and have diligently been fighting set backs since then to make this video happen. Out from my tool chest I have now shown a reflector that has extremely high diffuse reflectance and greater than 97% reflectance across the visible spectrum. Later in 2013 or 2014 photovoltaics and batteries are going to improve by orders of magnitude. I believe we are on the cusp of a new age of hybrid solar powered transportation. E-Bike riding on ice and snow I keep my tires at minimal air pressure of around 30psi or less which helps with traction, however during this video recording I did forget to …

Electrifying Solar Powered Snowboard: Every Third Thursday

December 20th, 2012

The sun shines brightly on this month’s episode of Every Third Thursday. Dave Lee and Signal Snowboards team up with Powerfilm Solar to create a solar-powered snowboard! At the Signal Snowboard factory the flexible solar panels are adhered to the snowboard top sheet and then wired into a converter mounted between the bindings. With the build complete, it’s time to test out the voltage off the grid. Snowboarder Tyler Flanagan straps in and charges the Mammoth Mountain jumps while charging his electronics at the same time—this electrifying new board passes the test.
